Mandela's remains arrive in Qunu for state funeral

The body of Nelson Mandela has arrived at his ancestral home village of Qunu in South Africa's Eastern Cape ahead of the anti-apartheid leader's state funeral later today (Australian time).

Mandela's remains were flown to Mthatha from Pretoria's Waterkloof air force base after spending three days lying in state.

The coffin carrying the body of South Africa's first black president was then driven in a hearse from Mthatha airport, 700km south of Johannesburg, with a ceremonial military escort and cheered by crowds lining parts of the road.

Compared to Tuesday's mass memorial, Sunday's state funeral at Qunu will be a smaller affair focusing on the family, but dignitaries, including Britain's Prince Charles and a small group of African and Caribbean leaders, will also attend.

South Africa's retired Archbishop, Desmond Tutu, has decided to attend the funeral for his friend and fellow Nobel peace laureate, despite earlier saying that he wouldn't.

But there is at the margins signs of a "weak-tea party", made up essentially of far right commentators and a small minority in the parliamentary party who want to use high office to settle scores.

Abbott considers lifting Qantas ownership restrictions

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has suggested he could support lifting foreign-ownership restrictions on Qantas in response to the airline's claims it is not on a level playing field.

Qantas says strict foreign ownership rules are making it hard to compete with Virgin and there are a number of ways the Government could help.

Mr Abbott has previously ruled out providing subsidies to the airline and says the Government will not guarantee the airline's debt.

But he has told the Financial Review it is not an "unreasonable" request by Qantas to have the Qantas Sale Act lifted.
