Abbott set to announce help for Holden workers

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is today expected to outline an assistance package to help Holden workers find new jobs.

The iconic carmaker announced last week that it would end Australian manufacturing operations in 2017.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine will today meet with representatives from the car industry and the South Australian Government.

Both states are urging the Government to bring forward infrastructure spending to cushion the impact of Holden's closure.

Mr Abbott says he wants to help workers move into new jobs in the same sector by focusing on the economic strengths in the affected communities.

All Hockey wants for Christmas is a lower dollar

Of all the economic presents that Joe Hockey is hoping to find under his tree, top of the list would be a lower Australian dollar.

A lower dollar would assist companies in the non-mining sector to feel confident that they can begin to rehire staff. A lower dollar would also assist the budget bottom line, as export earnings in foreign currency would be worth more in Australian dollars.

So if the dollar lowers as expected, when Joe Hockey reveals the 2014 MYEFO, he may be acting more like Santa Claus than the Grinch of this year's version.

Coalition confirms NDIS may be targeted for budget savings

The Federal Government has confirmed the National Disability Insurance Scheme may be targeted in the search for budget savings.

The Coalition's Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook yesterday revealed that the economy is in dire trouble and that there has been a $17 billion budget blowout.

Treasurer Joe Hockey warned that "difficult choices" will have to be made to "eliminate" wasteful spending.

Early data shows that the NDIS is costing more than expected, with demand for the scheme greater than forecast.

Finance Minister Mathias Cormann says the Government is committed to delivering the NDIS in the most efficient and cost effective way.
