RAAF en route to possible debris from MH370 in Indian Ocean

Australian search planes have been diverted to find two objects in the southern Indian Ocean "possibly related" to the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) says it has received an expert assessment of commercial satellite imagery of objects it suspects may be debris from the flight.

AMSA spokesman John Young says the images indicate that one of the objects measures around 24 metres in length.

Mr Young has emphasised the objects may be difficult to locate and they may not be related to the search.

"The objects are relatively indistinct on the imagery. I don't profess to be an expert in assessing the imagery, but those who are expert indicate they are credible sightings," he said.

Australia has been leading the search in an area 3,000 kilometres south-west of Perth.

Beyonce's sexual empowerment isn't feminism

Pop stars operate in a wider context that generally gives women two options: sex object or modest virgin. It's not surprising many will choose the former.

And so these always skinny and always pretty women swing naked on wrecking balls and stripper poles because this guarantees page views and downloads.

They may do so under the guise of empowerment, but, when a 'feminist' music video could pass for a scene out of True Detective or Underbelly, then it doesn't subvert patriarchy - it perpetuates it.

Myer shares slammed after profit falls on stagnating sales

Myer shares have been slammed after the department store posts an 8.1 per cent slide in first-half profit.

The retailer made a net profit after tax of $81 million for the key retail half-year period that ended on January 25.

Myer says that fall in profit came despite a 0.3 per cent rise in total sales compared to the same period last year to $1.74 billion.

The department store blamed investment costs related to store expansions as a major factor behind the profit slide, but investors were not convinced, selling Myer shares down heavily.

Senate blocks carbon tax repeal legislation

The Senate has voted down legislation to axe the carbon tax - a core election promise of Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

Labor and the Greens combined to vote against the repeal laws 33 votes to 29 today.

Greens leader Christine Milne has issued a statement saying the current law, maintaining a price on carbon, must stand.

But earlier the Government had moved to reintroduce carbon tax-related legislation that could set the stage for a double dissolution election.

"Axing the tax" was Mr Abbott's catch-cry during last year's election campaign, and the Government says the Senate's move will cost jobs and hurt the economy.
