Cate Blanchett wins best actress Oscar

Australian Cate Blanchett has beat a raft of Hollywood heavyweights to take home the best actress Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards in Hollywood.

12 Years A Slave took out the best picture Oscar, beating space thriller Gravity and crime caper American Hustle in one of the strongest fields in years.

It was a great night for Australia, with Catherine Martin taking out two Oscars for her work on The Great Gatsby.

Martin pipped compatriot Michael Wilkinson in the costume design category, and won a second statuette for production design.
