28 killed in stabbing rampage at Chinese train station

At least 28 people have been killed and 162 injured a "violent terrorist attack" at a train station in the south-western Chinese city of Kunming.

Knife-wielding attackers dressed in black burst into the station on Saturday (local time) and began slashing indiscriminately, according to state media.

Police shot dead five of the attackers at the train station, and are "chasing the rest".

Yang Haifei, who was wounded in the chest and back, has told Xinhua he was buying a train ticket when the attackers approached.

"I saw a person come straight at me with a long knife and I ran away with everyone," he said, while others "simply fell on the ground".

Qantas chairman backs embattled CEO Alan Joyce

The chairman of Qantas says he strongly supports chief executive Alan Joyce despite the airline's record $235 million half-year loss.

On Thursday Mr Joyce announced a plan to cut 5,000 jobs and reduce services, and said the airline would need to dramatically cut costs to be profitable.

The move led to renewed calls for Mr Joyce's sacking but Qantas chairman Leigh Clifford says he is still the right man to lead the company.
