Ex-cop critical of Daniel Morcombe murder investigation

The first police officer to interview Queensland teenager Daniel Morcombe's killer says there were systemic problems with the way the case was investigated.

Kenneth King interviewed Brett Peter Cowan two weeks after the Morcombe family reported their 13-year-old son was missing in 2003.

The former constable says he considered Cowan, who may be sentenced today, a "red-hot suspect" but that the officers heading the investigation had not taken his initial reports seriously enough.

Mr King, who left the force in 2008, says he has decided to go public with his concerns about the handling of the case because there are lessons for police and the judiciary to learn.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart says his officers should be proud of the way they investigated and solved the case.

Adding to the pile of disposable state premiers

There to meet them will be one premier who has fought two elections, two others who have fought one, and another who hasn't fought any.

The newcomers should not feel overwhelmed.
