Australia is taking a lead role in pushing for an international investigation into the deadly Malaysia Airlines crash with Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop on her way to the US. An international outpouring of grief continues after the shooting down of flight MH17 which killed 298 people, including 28 Australians and eight permanent Australian residents. Ms Bishop will launch a lobbying offensive at the United Nations in New York, and call for Security Council members to back a binding resolution on the investigation. Russia can veto any vote and it is unclear how it would deal with the resolution, but president Vladimir Putin has signaled support for a multi-national probe. International monitors have now been allowed to visit more of the crash site, though pro-Russian gunmen still stopped them approaching some of the wreckage. More » |
