Eric Abetz says Coalition is not 'disappearing' asylum seekers

Senior Coalition Minister Eric Abetz says the Government is not "disappearing" asylum seekers, amid secrecy surrounding the fate of more than 200 Sri Lankans thought to have been handed to the Sri Lankan navy.

The Government is not revealing details about two asylum seeker boats believed to have been intercepted off Christmas Island more than a week ago.

Human rights groups remain concerned about the fate of the Tamils on board one of the boats, saying at least 11 of the asylum seekers had been tortured by Sri Lanka's intelligence services.

Speaking on ABC's Insiders program, Senator Abetz told host Fran Kelly the details of the matter would be revealed "in due course".

He became one of those people so famous they are instantly identifiable only by their first name. Rolf. Remember him? He's the convicted sex offender we must now refer to as Harris.

Digital disruption could cost Australian banks $27 billion a year

Research from Macquarie's banking analysts says up to $27 billion is under threat from so-called digital disruptors in the banks' key payments and lending markets.

The Macquarie team says most immediate threat is the $9 billion payments market, which faces competition from alternative platforms.

Longer term, Macquarie says banks face an even bigger problem with their lending business.
