Morrison to visit Sri Lanka amid silence on fate of Tamil asylum seekers

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison will visit Sri Lanka this week as the Federal Government keeps its silence over a group of Tamil asylum seekers who are believed to have fled the country.

Mr Morrison will attend the commissioning ceremony for the two former Australian Customs patrol vessels gifted to the Sri Lankan government.

Mr Morrison's visit comes as human rights groups remain concerned about the fate of 153 Tamils who were reportedly intercepted at sea near Christmas Island and handed to Sri Lanka's navy.

Digital disruption could cost Australian banks $27 billion a year

Australia's big banks face the prospect of losing 30 per cent of their revenue to a new wave of digital competitors.

Research from Macquarie's banking analysts says up to $27 billion is under threat from so-called digital disruptors in the banks' key payments and lending markets.

The Macquarie team says most immediate threat is the $9 billion payments market, which faces competition from alternative platforms.

Longer term, Macquarie says banks face an even bigger problem with their lending business.

Oyster farmers stop production after toxin found in shellfish

Two oyster growers on Tasmania's east coast have stopped production after the discovery of a shellfish toxin in the area.

People have been warned not to eat wild shellfish from the Great Oyster Bay area on the east coast and Norfolk Bay in Tasmania's south.

The toxin was also detected at permissible levels at Greater Swanport.

Health authorities discovered the potentially fatal toxin during routine testing.

Cancer risk prompts call to test more industrial sites

The Greens are calling for testing of more former industrial sites in South Australia for toxic pollution.

The residents of three streets at Clovelly Park in Adelaide's southern suburbs are to be moved out because of a carcinogenic substance detected in air, water and soil.

The industrial solvent trichloroethylene was used decades ago in the area by automotive firm Monroe Australia.
