ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what you need to know so far today:

  • A former ADF sniper turned Comancheros bikie boss will serve at least six years in jail for running a drug ring on "intimidation, fear and violence". The judge said Joshua Faulkhead deserved a lengthy jail term despite his PTSD and that he could be rehabilitated

  • A WA hunter who "took off after a camel and became disoriented and lost" in the bush for six days has been found alive. His family says he survived without water by eating ants and promises to get him a satelite phone

  • Proposed changes to anti-terror laws would mean suspects as young as 14 could be placed under control orders. George Brandis says that's reasonable because Islamic State militants are targeting young people. The changes will be tabled in Parliament next month

Heading out for coffee? Hold up. The "humble latte is certainly no problem" but if you're using it to wash down a sweet treat, the Cancer Council has a warning for you.

ICYMI: Our politics blog returned today and can catch you up on the day's events in Canberra. Late debate in Parliament has been dominated by the China trade deal.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 5:00pm AEDT : New Greens senator Robert Simms will give his maiden speech to the Senate

  • 5:30pm AEDT: The AFP Commissioner will help launch a report by think tank ASPI into the drug ice and strategies for dealing with it

  • 6:00pm AEDT : New Liberal MP Andrew Hastie will give his maiden speech in the Lower House
