ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • Tony Abbott has told European leaders to close their borders to asylum seekers. In a speech in London this morning, the former PM has said the move would "gnaw at our consciences", but is needed to prevent "a tide of humanity surging through Europe".

  • China has warned the US not to "make a fool of itself" as its navy shadowed a US warship near Chinese-made islands in a disputed part of the South China Sea. ABC correspondent Stephanie March says one-third of the world's oil passes through the sea's shipping lanes every year.

  • The death toll from the Afghanistan earthquake has passed 360 and survivors are pleading for supplies as the region's harsh winter approaches. The Taliban says it will help aid agencies reach those in need.
