ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Engineer and entrepreneur Dr Alan Finkel will be our new chief scientist. During a lively press conference with the PM, Dr Finkel spoke about his vision for a world "where we don't have to use any coal". Malcolm Turnbull quickly clarified, saying coal would be around "for a very long time". Dr Finkle is described as the "electric planet" visionary.

  • The death toll from the earthquake in South Asia is expected to rise as aid organisations in Afghanistan and Pakistan reach the worst affected areas

  • After a day of bacon bashing, some specialists have responded to the WHO's decision to list processed meats as a group 1 carcinogen alongside tobacco smoke and asbestos. They say the move "doesn't mean you need to stop eating any red and processed meat". Maybe just consider cutting back. We're somewhat relieved...

NASA's Cassini spacecraft is due to make the "deepest ever" flyby of Saturn's Enceladus moon on Wednesday. The plan is to fly through an icy plume of ocean water just 49 kilometres from the moon's surface

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 10:35pm AEDT: Lateline revisits Foreign Correspondent's story on Italy's asylum seeker rescue operation one year on

  • 2:00am AEDT: Angela Merkel is visiting Paris and is due to meet Francois Hollande and European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker

  • The US women's soccer team - and World Cup champions - will take up Barack Obama on his invite and visit the White House overnight
