ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • Former treasurer Joe Hockey is preparing to give his final speech in Parliament, expected sometime this morning. ABC political reporter James Glenday says Mr Hockey was once seen as a future leader, but could not overcome the reception to the 2014 budget. There'll be a by-election in his seat.

  • Ahmed Mohamed, the boy arrested in Texas for taking a clock to school, met Barack Obama at the White House. Mr Obama said curiosity needed to be encouraged, not suppressed. Ahmed said people should be judged "by their heart, not what they look like". Shortly before that, Ahmed told the ABC all the attention was "fun" but the incident still made him uncomfortable.

  • Ahmed might be too young to fully appreciate it, but everyone else should know it's Back to the Future day! Check out our review of the science predictions the movie got right (and what we're still waiting for).

Here's what's coming up today:

  • 8:30am AEDT : Racing resumes in the Solar Car Challenge, with the winner expected to finish this evening if the weather plays ball

  • 9:00am AEDT : Senate estimates resume, this time looking at foreign affairs, defence, education and economics

  • 12:30pm : The winners of the PM's Science Awards will be announced

  • 12:30pm : Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells will be at the National Press Club

  • 2:00pm AEDT: Question Time resumes in the House of Representatives

  • 2:00pm AEDT: Controversial Dutch politician Geert Wilders will give a media conference in Perth

  • 3:00pm AEDT: Ricky Ponting, Casey Stoner and Liesel Jones will be among eight athletes inducted in the sports hall of fame
