ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Overnight it was confirmed MH17 was brought down by a Russian-made missile. Here's what you need to know:

  • The Dutch Safety Board report has found a BUK missile detonated outside MH17's cockpit, causing the plane to break up in the air. Passengers not killed instantly would have lost consciousness "within moments" - possibly up to 90 seconds.

  • The report doesn't say who fired the missile. Malaysia's Transport Minister has vowed to pursue the "trigger-happy criminals" responsible. A separate investigation on who is to blame is due next year.

  • The safety report also said passenger flights should never have been allowed in the air over eastern Ukraine when there was armed conflict on the ground below. ABC correspondent Lisa Millar said 160 other planes used the air space before MH17 was brought down.

  • Russia's deputy foreign minister says the findings are "biased".

  • The downing of the plane killed 298 people, including 38 Australians. Read their stories.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 07.50am AEDT: The winner of the Booker prize literary award will be announced in London

  • 08.00am AEDT: Julie Bishop is due on ABC's AM program to respond to the MH17 report

  • 09.15am AEDT: Minister for Women Michaelia Cash is at a conference on efforts to counter domestic violence

  • 09.30am AEDT: Two reports on drug use in Australia will detail how use of ice and cannabis is on the rise

  • 10.15am AEDT: The High Court is due to issue a ruling on a royalties dispute between Rio Tinto, Gina Rinehart and the heirs of Peter Wright, potentially worth more than $100 million.

  • 12.00pm AEDT: Democratic candidates for president will hold a debate in Las Vegas

  • 12.30pm AEDT: Qantas CEO Alan Joyce will address the National Press Club in Canberra

  • 2.00pm AEDT: Question Time in the House of Representatives.
