Former British PM Margaret Thatcher dead

Former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87 following a stroke.

As Britain's longest-serving 20th century prime minister and the only woman to have held the job, the 'Iron Lady' is being remembered as a strong but divisive leader who presided over a decade of radical change in Britain.

She died peacefully on Monday, family spokesman Lord Tim Bell said.

Union flags flew at half mast over Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the prime minister's Downing Street official residence, while mourners left flowers outside Baroness Thatcher's house.

Britain announced plans for a ceremonial funeral next week of the kind given to Princess Diana, although it is a step short of the full state funeral of the kind accorded to monarchs and World War II premier Winston Churchill.

China economic ties put Australia in the right place

The Prime Minister's visit to China is of immense importance to the future of Australia's economic relationship with the Middle Kingdom.

China's relationship with Australia as an export destination, import source, and trading partner has grown in leaps and bounds, and despite the occasional PR skirmish, the investment relationship is pretty healthy too.

The showcase of Julia Gillard's official visit, the announcement of convertibility of Australian dollars into the Chinese yuan, is a good first step on the long march to seamless economic ties between the two countries.
