Gillard told Labor will be 'dead' if Government's message not sold better

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has come under fire from one of her strongest Caucus supporters, the western Sydney MP Laurie Ferguson, as the latest polls show an electoral disaster looming for the Labor party.

Today's Newspoll, published in The Australian newspaper, shows dissatisfaction in Prime Minister Julia Gillard's performance has climbed from 59 per cent to 62 per cent, while only 28 per cent of respondents are satisfied with her performance.

It is believed that Mr Ferguson, the Labor MP for the seat of Werriwa, challenged Ms Gillard in today's Caucus meeting about the issue of asylum seekers, telling her she needs to sell the Government's message better, otherwise "we are dead", a reference to crucial seats in western Sydney.
