Queensland putting politics ahead of kids in Gonski feud: Gillard

Julia Gillard has accused Queensland Premier Campbell Newman of bowing to pressure from the Federal Opposition and turning his back on the state's children by refusing to sign the Gonski education deal.

The PM has written to Mr Newman calling on him to accept the extra federal money on offer and boost his own education spending in today's state budget.

"There can be no excuse for your government’s wilful  misrepresentation of the scale of investment that is available, and surely there will be no forgiveness for you turning your back on Queensland’s kids," she said.

So far only New South Wales and the ACT have signed up for Gonski.

The working woman instils fear in the vocal few

The rise of the female breadwinner is undeniably a sign of progress in a society. After fighting for the right to educate girls, seeing them contribute in the workforce would naturally follow.

In the United States, an analysis of Census data by the Pew Research Centre found that four in 10 households with children under 18 are now led by a female sole or primary earner. This compares to 11 per cent in 1960.

But far from celebration, some see this progress as a threat to the wellbeing of American children.
