Both Rudd and Abbott chose to play a defensive game almost from the start. There was no real passion and not even much conviction. But at least it took the heat out of what had been a pretty terrible week for Kevin Rudd and the ALP. The company says the loss was the result of $6.23 billion worth of writedowns on a range of assets, triggered by a slump in gold prices.
