Gay marriage is 'fashion of the moment': Abbott

Barely a day after triggering controversy by saying a female candidate had "sex appeal", Tony Abbott has copped more criticism for describing same-sex marriage as the "fashion of the moment".

"My idea is to build on the strength of our society and I support, by and large, evolutionary change," he told Sydney Radio 2SM this morning when asked about gay marriage.

"I'm not someone who wants to see radical change based on the fashion of the moment."

Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the comments are "deeply offensive" and "out of touch".
