Coalition says plan to buy back asylum boats 'would save lives'

The Coalition has pledged to buy back unseaworthy boats from Indonesian villagers as part of its plan to increase regional action against people smuggling.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott today announced $420 million in policy measures, including increasing the number of Australian Federal Police officers working overseas, boosting Indonesia's search and rescue capabilities, and supplementing Australia's border protection fleet.

Immigration Minister Tony Burke has labelled the boat buyback plan as "simply crazy policy" and accused the Coalition of making it up on the run.
