Labor moves to capitalise on RBA's interest rate cut

Labor is moving to capitalise on the Reserve Bank's decision to cut the official interest rate by 25 basis points to an historic low of 2.5 per cent.

The rate has now been cut by 225 basis points since November 2011 and is at its lowest level since 1960.

"The fact is that now, under Labor, interest rates are at record lows," Treasurer Chris Bowen said.

"Australian families and businesses know that lower interest rates are a good thing, especially with the economy continuing to grow."

Not the time to convince us of economic prowess

It's hard not to conclude that the Prime Minister's economic seriousness is purely for show - a marketing pitch rather than a strategic plan.

Kevin Rudd has spent so much time rushing from issue to issue - boats, Eddie Obeid, carbon tax - that he hasn't put enough work into his basic economic credibility.

One National Press Club speech and a few graphs won't do it. And an election campaign is not a great time to try to prove you can control the nation's finances.

Abbott says voters can do the maths on budget bottom line

The Coalition has fended off Labor attacks over its decision not to commit to its own budget bottom line when it releases its policy costings, with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott saying voters will be "able to do the arithmetic".

Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey has again confirmed the Coalition will not provide a final budget figure because he does not trust the Treasury numbers used by the Government.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has described it as a "stunning development" and says it is "unacceptable in a democracy".
