A collection of 64 rarely seen works by Australian artist Sidney Nolan have gone on public display, ahead of an auction later this month.

With many dating from Nolan's first years as a professional painter, some of the works are expected to sell for as little as $800.

But at least one art expert hopes the pieces will remain together in public hands, because of the rare insight they give into Nolan's development as a painter.

News Corp Australia CEO Kim Williams resigns

News Corp Australia chief executive Kim Williams has resigned his post after less than two years at the helm, the company has announced.

The statement, published on the ASX website, quoted News chairman Rupert Murdoch as thanking Mr Williams for his "nearly two decades of service" and his "loyalty".

Former Herald and Weekly Times chairman Julian Clarke, a 30-year company veteran, has been appointed to replace Mr Williams.

Mr Williams has held various executive positions in the Australian media, including at the ABC, the Australian Film Commission, Southern Star Entertainment and Musica Viva Australia.
