Leaders back on campaign trail after election debate

Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott are back on the campaign trail this morning after both claiming victory in the first election debate.

Last night's exchange had a heavy emphasis on the economy and who could be trusted to best manage it, while the Prime Minister promised to introduce a bill on same-sex marriage within 100 days of being re-elected.

But the Coalition has taken a swipe at Mr Rudd, claiming he cheated during the debate by using notes.

Meanwhile, two new opinion polls this morning show there has been no movement in support for the major parties after the first week of the campaign.

Leaders answer questions, but where's the debate?

Both participants prepared for the first debate of the election season in their own way. The Prime Minister spent the morning at church. The Opposition Leader ran 14 kilometres from Hyde Park to Bondi, handcuffed to another man.

Against the tenderly nonpartisan mauve of the National Press Club stage, Mr Rudd and Mr Abbott took turns to deliver mild-mannered declamations of their intent.

When new questions were asked, each of them invariably found something to say, though not really to each other.

Some Samsung imports banned in patent case

The US International Trade Commission has blocked imports of some older model Samsung mobile devices following complaints by Apple that the South Korean company had violated its patents.

The ruling by the US-based trade body was the latest in a long-running and bitter global battle over alleged patent infringement between the two smartphone and tablet computer giants.

The ITC ruled that Samsung had infringed two Apple patents - numbers 949 and 501, dealing with touch-screen actions and headphone jack plug-ins - but cleared the South Korean company of charges that it had violated four more.

Apple welcomed the ITC ruling while Samsung expressed its disappointment.
