Liberals to preference Labor over Greens in blow to Bandt

Tony Abbott will today announce the Coalition will preference Labor above the Greens in every Lower House seat at the election.

The Opposition Leader's move is designed to rule out the chances of the September 7 election resulting in a minority government.

It will make it more difficult for the Greens to pick up new seats, or retain the marginal seat of Melbourne held by Adam Bandt.

Mr Bandt, the sole Greens MP in the Lower House, won the inner-city seat on the back of Liberal Party preferences in 2010.

Election live: Abbott to stick knife into Greens, Rudd campaigns in Cairns

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is poised to deal a blow to the Greens' electoral chances today, announcing that the Coalition will preference Labor over the minority party in every Lower House seat in September 7.

Mr Abbott's move will make it more difficult for the Greens to pick up new seats, or hold on to the marginal seat of Melbourne.

In the middle of the campaign's second week, Mr Abbott starts the day in Brisbane while PM Kevin Rudd is in Cairns before later heading to the Queensland capital.
