This election is rich in trivia but not much else

The fact that American satirical program The Daily Show with Jon Stewart has already devoted 10 minutes to Australia's election campaign, with the promise of more to come, is testament to our quality trivia.

No doubt the program's producers are calling up videotape of Tony Abbott talking about the "suppository" of all wisdom, and promoting one of his candidates partly on her sex appeal.

But the fact is, none of this would be so engrossing if the substance wasn't so elusive.
