UN wants to inspect suspected Syrian chemical attack site

The United Nations has formally asked the Syrian government to grant its inspection team immediate access to the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack near the capital Damascus.

Syria's opposition National Coalition says more than 1,300 people were killed by poisonous gases in rebel-held areas south-west of the capital on Wednesday.

Footage distributed by activists showing unconscious children, people foaming at the mouth and doctors apparently giving them oxygen to help them breathe has triggered revulsion around the world.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon has asked for access to the site "without delay".
