Syria, rebels blame each other for chemical attack

Syrian state media says regime troops have found nerve gas materials in tunnels used by rebels, after the suspected chemical attack in the capital Damascus last week.

The claim contradicts opposition groups who say the government launched nerve gas at its own citizens killing hundreds of people - an accusation that has been fiercely denied.

Doctors Without Borders confirmed around 3,600 patients displaying "neurotoxic symptoms" were treated in Syrian hospitals on the day of the alleged attacks and 355 of them died.

The escalating crisis in Syria has prompted high level meetings in Canberra, Washington and in Europe about how the international community should respond.

The Opposition Leader's paid parental leave scheme adds to an emerging picture about the contradictions of his personal brand of conservatism.

It appears that Tony Abbott is a 'big government' interventionist who is on course for an ongoing battle with his conservative base.

Election live: Coalition to officially launch election campaign in Brisbane

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott is set to announce new funding support for apprentices at today's official launch of the Coalition's election campaign in Brisbane.

Mr Abbott and his deputy, Opposition foreign affairs spokeswoman Julie Bishop, are then expected to receive a national security briefing on the crisis in Syria.

The Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister received a similar briefing last night and say the Government will have more to say on the issue this morning.

Kevin Rudd has denied suggestions the briefing was delayed in order for him to record an episode of ABC cooking show Kitchen Cabinet yesterday afternoon.
