Live coverage: Day one of the election campaign

The Coalition has maintained its lead over Labor, with the first major opinion poll of the election campaign showing the Coalition ahead 52-48 on a two-party preferred basis.

As campaigning begins, Kevin Rudd is set to announce an extra $200 million in financial assistance for the industry.

The new support package comes after the Government suffered a backlash over changes to the fringe benefits tax for cars.
