Asylum seeker dead, 77 injured in Manus riot

One asylum seeker is dead, another is in a critical condition and 13 are being treated for serious injuries after a second night of violence at the Manus Island detention centre.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison said it was his "great regret" to report the extent of the injuries inflicted on the asylum seekers.

He has promised a full inquiry into the incident from which 77 asylum seekers were treated, 40 had been discharged and 22 suffered minor injuries.

"There were 13 serious injuries, there was one critical injury, and there is one person who is deceased," he said.

Mr Morrison has promised a full inquiry into the death, while the Opposition is demanding to know what steps the Government will take to stop the violence.

The great corporate welfare con-versation

We have 200 years of experience to show us why giving welfare to private corporations is economically ineffective and morally dubious.

But amid to clamour to do something about job losses it still proves tempting for governments to use taxpayers' money to prop up business.

And many voters like the idea, too, because the gains are easy to see while the costs are spread out and harder to pinpoint.

Virgin's Borghetti slams Qantas and Hockey over assistance talk

Virgin's boss John Borghetti says Qantas is peddling myths, and the Federal Government is buying them.

The usually reserved Mr Borghetti appeared on the ABC's AM and RN Breakfast programs this morning to argue that Qantas was simply conning the Government into giving it a "free ride".

He says the Government should not subsidise Qantas's strategy to maintain 65 per cent market share through providing it with a de4bt guarantee.

Mr Borghetti also responded to the Treasurer Joe Hockey's description of his airline as a "3,000-pound gorilla" largely owned by three foreign government-backed carriers.
