Tens of thousands flee, airports closed as Java volcano erupts

Tens of thousands of Indonesians have fled their homes and at least three people have died after a volcano on the island of Java erupted.

The eruption of Mount Kelud spewed out ash and sand 17 kilometres into the air, causing widespread disruption to flights with the closure of three international airports.

Virgin Australia cancelled all flights serving Phuket, Denpasar, Christmas Island and Cocos Island.

Qantas cancelled a flight from Sydney to Jakarta and a Jetstar flight from Perth to Singapore was forced to turn back due to the ash cloud.

A few hours before the eruption, officials raised an alert urging people living in villages within 10km of the volcano to evacuate.
