Cancer is Australia's biggest killer, WHO says

Cancer has surpassed heart disease as the biggest killer in Australia, according to a new report from the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The WHO's World Cancer Report found 8.2 million people died from cancer globally in 2012, including 40,000 Australians.

The report was last released six years ago and this is the first major international update on the disease since then.

In Australia and other Western countries, the rise in cancer cases has been attributed to ageing populations and increased screening.

But the report says 3.7 million cancer deaths could have been avoided by lifestyle changes, such as quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake and maintaining a healthy weight.

Abuse of power does nothing to protect us

Arrogant, ill-informed politicians who cynically misuse the power of the state for personal or political benefit are a far greater threat to democracy than criminals - even organised gangs.

Whichever party is in government and whatever its motive, every abuse or misuse of power is profoundly wrong and every injustice in our name affects us all and diminishes us as a society.

It's easy to ignore injustice when we're not personally affected, especially if we disapprove of those involved, but history shows that it's unwise to do so.

Tanker company in fatal explosion 'cut corners on maintenance'

A fuel tanker company involved in a fatal accident in Sydney last year was using large numbers of dilapidated vehicles that should never have been on the road, according to a whistleblower working inside the company.

Two people were killed and five injured when a Cootes Transport tanker rolled on its side, burst into flames and collided with several cars on Mona Vale Road last October.

A long-standing Cootes employee has told the ABC's Four Corners program the company used vehicles that should not have been on the road.

"I know for a fact of trucks being driven with very poor repair jobs done on them. They should never have been on the road - they should've been put on a tow truck, but they continue to work," the whistleblower said.

The ABC has also learned that brake linings on the trailer destroyed in the Mona Vale accident were worn down and well beyond the point at which they needed replacement.
