Lifeboat carrying asylum seekers lands on Indonesian coast

Asylum seekers discovered on Wednesday night on the Indonesian coast say they were nearly ready to disembark at Christmas Island when the Australian Navy sent them back.

The ABC has obtained exclusive footage of an orange lifeboat after it landed on Java's south coast on Wednesday night.

The Indonesian navy says there were 34 people on board the lifeboat, which had recently been purchased by the Australian Navy.

ABC News has sought comment from Immigration Minister Scott Morrison, but he is on a diplomatic tour abroad.

A spokeswoman for the Minister said: "In line with the policy of not discussing what happens at sea, the Government has no response on the issues raised."

The Abbott Government should distance itself from the Sea Shepherd's dangerous tactics and ban its vessels from entering Australian ports.

Ford cutting 300 jobs at Victorian plants from June

Carmaker Ford has announced it will cut 300 jobs at its manufacturing plants at Geelong and Broadmeadows, in Victoria beginning in June because of falling demand.

The company says it will match jobs with demand and if the market for Ford cars falls further, there may be more cuts.

AMWU spokesman Dave Smith says the cuts were not totally unexpected given the falling sales figures.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says any job losses are deeply regrettable but he says the important thing is to promote policies which will boost our economic strength.
