Malaysian military denies detecting missing plane

The Malaysian air force has denied reports a passenger plane that vanished with 239 people on board was detected on radar far west of its flight path.

Interpol has all but ruled out terrorism as the cause of the disappearance of flight MH370, which went missing on Saturday while travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

Air force chief General Rodzali Daud was quoted as saying that radar had last detected the plane over the Strait of Malacca off western Malaysia, which would have indicated it veered west from its intended flight path.

But Mr Rodzali says he "did not make any such statements," and that newspaper Berita Harian published "what is clearly an inaccurate and incorrect report".

However, he says authorities have not ruled out the possibility the airliner inexplicably changed course before losing contact.

The dangers of collectivism haven't passed

Nobody but the most ardent socialist would have imagined, in 1944, that Western government fiscal activities, predominated by welfare transfers, would account for the 35 to 50 per cent of national income.

Nor could they have envisaged the extensive web of regulations ensnaring individuals and businesses within an ever-decreasing ambit to undertake discretionary actions, and exercise their own choices.

Seventy years after Friedrich Hayek released his seminal book on the dangers of collectivism, we should take his wise advice and sharply reverse our journey toward the final hellish destination on the road to serfdom.

How severe is the drought in Queensland and New South Wales?

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has announced a $320 million assistance package to support drought-hit farmers in NSW and Queensland.

Justifying the package, Mr Abbott said: "Drought of this severity is not the normal course of business. This is not just a once-in-a-decade drought. It's a once-in-a-quarter-century drought in many places. In some places, it's a once-in-a-century drought".

ABC Fact Check investigates.
