Australians on missing flight to Beijing named as oil slick spotted at sea

The six Australian passengers among 239 people on board a Malaysia Airlines flight that disappeared en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur have been named.

The airline released a passenger list naming Australians Robert and Catherine Lawton, Rodney and Mary Burrows and Gu Naijun and Li Yuan.

Two of the couples are from Queensland and one couple is from New South Wales.

There are reports Perth-based New Zealand man Paul Weeks was also on the flight.

Flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time on Saturday, just over two hours into what should have been a six-hour journey.

A full-scale international search and rescue operation is underway to find the aircraft with attention zoning in on waters between southern Vietnam and Malaysia.

Vietnam says its rescue planes have spotted two large oil slicks, and a column of smoke off its coastline, but it is not clear if they are connected to the missing plane.

Hardly the wages blowout of an inflexible market

Joe Hockey and Eric Abetz must be delighted with the current structure of the industrial relations system and the degree of flexibility in labour market conditions.

If the labour market were rigid, inflexible or the industrial relations system were in need of a major overhaul, wages growth would not have slowed to a record low in the wake of the upward trend in the unemployment rate.

This suggests the hidden agenda of reform to the labour market slowly but surely being unfurled by the Coalition government is not really about macroeconomic management.

World leaders warn of 'new measures' against Russia over Ukraine crisis

The presidents of the United States and France have warned of "new measures" if Russia refuses to withdraw its forces from the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea.

In a phone call, Barack Obama and Francois Hollande insisted on the "need for Russia to withdraw forces and to allow the deployment of international observers".

Mr Obama also sought to reassure nervous Baltic leaders about US support for their security and consulted other European allies about the Ukraine crisis.

Meanwhile, US secretary of state John Kerry warned Russia that any steps to annex Ukraine's Crimea region would close the door to diplomacy.

Mr Kerry's latest telephone call with his Russian counterpart, foreign minister Sergei Lavrov, came as the standoff between occupying Russian forces and besieged Ukrainian troops intensified in Crimea.

Rinehart takes aim at Australia's 'entitlement mentality'

Billionaire mining magnate Gina Rinehart has attacked Australia's "entitlement mentality" and called on the nation's leaders to emulate former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

In a feature article for the current edition of Australian Resources and Investment, Mrs Rinehart wrote Australia is facing a future of government debt due largely to its $130 billion annual welfare bill.

"This 'age of entitlement' and its consequences is creating problems for all of us, our children and our grandchildren. Strong leadership will be the key," she said.

Mrs Rinehart's example of strong leadership is the late Thatcher, known as the Iron Lady.
