Swimmer killed in shark attack at Byron Bay

A 50-year-old local man has died after being attacked by a shark while swimming at a beach at Byron Bay in northern New South Wales.

Police said the man's wife was on the beach when he was pulled from the water about 10:45am (AEST) after he was seen floating close to the shore.

Officers said he sustained a severe injury to his right leg while swimming about 15 to 20 metres offshore at Clarkes Beach.

A beachgoer pulled him out of the water and onlookers performed CPR, but the man could not be saved.

Authorities said a shark, believed to be a great white, was still in the area and all local beaches have been closed for at least 24 hours.
