Ford cutting 300 jobs at Victorian plants from June

Carmaker Ford has announced it will cut 300 jobs at its manufacturing plants at Geelong and Broadmeadows, in Victoria beginning in June because of falling demand.

The company says it will match jobs with demand and if the market for Ford cars falls further, there may be more cuts.

AMWU spokesman Dave Smith says the cuts were not totally unexpected given the falling sales figures.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says any job losses are deeply regrettable but he says the important thing is to promote policies which will boost our economic strength.
