ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • In breaking news, Britain has launched its first air strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria, six hours after MPs voted in favour of increasing military action

  • A man and a woman suspected of killing 14 people in a California disability services centre have been shot dead and a third suspect is in custody. US media say one of the suspects has been identified as Syed Farook. Public records show a man with the same name worked in the department that had gathered for the party that was targeted by gunmen

  • More detail is emerging about the massive cyber attack on the Bureau of Meteorology, with a classified brief recommending a complete replacement of the weather agency's information technology systems. The brief also states that the bureau's systems are still compromised, with one key concern being it's link to the Defence Department

The Museum of Australian Democracy is showcasing the country's best political cartoons in an exhibition that focuses on the right to provoke, mock and satirise

Here's what's coming up:

  • 6.45pm AEDT: A South African court is set to rule on an appeal to upgrade Oscar Pistorius's manslaughter conviction to murder and return him to prison

  • 7.00pm AEDT: The Walkley Awards for excellence in journalism will be held in Melbourne

  • 7.30pm AEDT: Melbourne v Illawarra in the National Basketball League
