  • Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is preparing to announce a $1 billion plan to encourage innovation, including a relaxation of bankruptcy laws and changes to the 457 visa scheme to encourage more highly skilled workers to Australia. The CSIRO is expected to receive a $100 million boost after it lost $110 million in the 2014 budget

  • Labor will announce a suite of measures to improve union governance today, after the royal commission uncovered widespread misconduct. The measures are expected to include tougher penalties for criminal offences and more protection for whistleblowers

  • Anti-Islamic State fighter Ashley Dyball is returning home to Brisbane this morning after several hours of questioning by Australian Federal Police in Melbourne last night. Mr Dyball, who fought with a Kurdish militia against IS, was released without charge pending further enquiry
