ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • The CSIRO's boss has used a Senate estimates hearing to apologise. Larry Marshall offended some people when he described the emotion around the climate change debate as "more religion than science". However, he did not back away from his plan to shake up the organisation's climate division

  • A little boy named Domenic was the star of the show today. He became Iron Boy and saved Sydney from evil forces as part of an elaborate Make-a-Wish special mission. Domenic has cystic fibrosis and said "if I had a super power it would be to heal". Thank you Iron Boy!

  • Barnaby Joyce looks set take the deputy prime ministership. He will have no challenger for the Nationals leadership when the party meets tonight to decide on Warren Truss's replacement. Follow all the action in Canberra on our live blog

A few days ago international affairs specialist Benjamin Habib froze during an interview on News Breakfast. He has penned a brave and insightful piece for The Drum on having his battle with anxiety "thrust into the public domain". It's worth a read

Here's what's coming up tonight:

  • 9:30pm: An advisor to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad will be interviewed on Lateline

  • 9:30pm: The program will also cross to Parliament House to cover the result of the Nationals leadership vote

  • 11:00pm AEDT: The trial of a former Auschwitz guard opens in Germany

  • 1:00am AEDT: German leader Angela Merkel is due to meet with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi
