Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Voting is underway in the US presidential election but don't hold your breath for a result just yet, it's not due until at least tomorrow afternoon. Washington DC bureau chief Zoe Daniel says polls have tightened over the past fortnight and while Mrs Clinton is still the favourite to win the election it's promising to be a tight race

  • There are allegations that dozens of people have been arrested in Ethiopia in retaliation for protests by their relatives in Australia. The Federal Government says it is treating the matter seriously and has raised it with the Ethiopian Government

  • Cronulla Sharks player Ben Barba has been released from his contract and banned for 12 NRL games after returning a positive test for cocaine after the club's grand final win

Here's what's coming up:

  • 4:00pm AEDT: The first votes are cast in the US election, with the tiny town of Dixville Notch, New Hampshire, opening its polling booth for all 12 of its residents at midnight local time

  • 4:30pm AEDT: A Senate committee will investigate the indefinite detention of people with cognitive and psychiatric impairments

  • 9:00pm AEDT: Polling booths begin to open across the rest of the United States
