ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • Iraqi special forces say they have found evidence Australians have been working with extremists as they push deeper into the Islamic State stronghold of Mosul

  • Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says there will be short-term "winners and losers" in the bid to strengthen the economy for all

  • French Prime Minister Manuel Valls says the European Union is in danger of breaking apart unless France and Germany work harder to stimulate growth and employment and heed citizens' concerns

An ultra-bright cosmic flash of radio waves from a galaxy far, far away has given scientists an unprecedented view of what lies between galaxies in the Universe. Last year, an international team of scientists using CSIRO's Parkes radio telescope picked up one of these "fast radio bursts" which they say was at least one billion light-years away.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 9:30am AEDT: The Australian Council of Social Service conference will start in Sydney

  • 12:00pm AEDT: NSW Premier Mike Baird is expected to speak from the north coast of the state about new shark nets that will be installed at local beaches including those at Ballina

  • 12:15pm AEDT: The National Portrait Gallery will unveil a portrait of Dame Quentin Bryce

  • 12:30pm AEDT: Health Minister Sussan Ley will open a new hospital on the Gold Coast
