ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • Two people have been killed after a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck near Christchurch in New Zealand this morning. Thousands had to be evacuated to higher ground because of a tsunami generated by the quake, which caused widespread damage on the northeast coast of the South Island

  • The Federal Government has been urged by the United Nations refugee agency to find a solution for all asylum seekers on Manus Island and Nauru, not just those recognised as refugees. The UNHCR says it will endorse the resettlement deal between Australia and the US, but called on both countries to act quickly

  • France has marked one year since the Paris terror attacks which killed 130. French President Francois Hollande and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo took part in a silent tour of each site targeted in the worst extremist violence to ever hit France

Make sure you take a look up in the sky from dusk tonight. The moon will be at its closest point to Earth in 70 years, an event known as a supermoon.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 10:00am AEDT: Day three of the second Test between Australia and South Africa begins in Hobart

  • 12:00pm AEDT: The Australia Indonesia Business Council conference will begin in Perth

  • 5:45pm AEDT: Liberal MP Tim Wilson will deliver this year's Acton lecture on religious liberty

  • 9:00pm AEDT: Julian Assange will be interviewed at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London over a 2010 rape allegation
