ABC NewsMail - Morning Edition

Good morning. Here's what's happening now:

  • South Australian senator Nick Xenophon says the Federal Government's decision to join a High Court action against One Nation senator Rod Culleton's election "seems unnecessary". The case aims to determine whether Mr Culleton was ineligible for election due to a prior conviction that has since been quashed

  • The Thai Government will allow Socceroos fans to cheer at the World Cup qualifier match in Bangkok this month, after earlier banning "joyful activities" after the death of the Thai king. Fans are "recommended but not required" to wear black

  • French energy company ENGIE will today make an announcement about the future of Victoria's Hazelwood power station. The plant's closure would cost about 800 jobs in the Latrobe Valley, which already has a high unemployment rate

A man getting out of the car to go to the toilet in the Flinders Ranges has stumbled across one of the most important prehistoric sites in Australia. The chance discovery of the rock shelter shows Aboriginal Australians settled the arid interior of the country around 49,000 years ago — some 10,000 years earlier than previously thought.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 8:05am AEST: Industry, Innovation and Science Minister Greg Hunt will be on Radio National where he is expected to be asked about the future of Victoria's Hazelwood power station

  • 9:30am AEDT: Creditors will meet to discuss the collapse of former senator Bob Day's Home Australia group of companies

  • 11:30am AEDT: The ABS balance of trade data will be released with the significant trade deficit expected to remain

  • 1:30pm AEDT: The first Test between Australia and South Africa begins at the WACA

  • 2:00pm AEDT: ENGIE will make its announcement about the future of the Hazelwood power station
