Ms Jackson told the commission she had been the victim of a smear campaign after she blew the whistle on the misuse of union funds by former Labor MP and HSU official Craig Thomson, and the union's former boss Michael Williamson. She broke down while giving evidence today, saying she had been called a "Liberal prostitute" and spent days in a Melbourne psychiatric hospital after receiving threats at her home. What of the fact that the Migration Act is underpinned by Australia's obligations under the UN Convention on Refugees to treat asylum seekers in a way that does not harm them? A more liberal interpretation of the Migration Act may well have seen a different result for those enduring and suffering on Manus Island.
