ISIS militants repelled from city near Baghdad

Score of Iraqis have been killed after militants attacked and took control of parts of the central Iraqi city of Baquba before security forces eventually repelled the assault, army and police officers said.

The attack took place in the centre of the capital of Diyala province, and according to the officers, saw militants temporarily occupying several neighbourhoods.

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon is warning there is a real risk of further sectarian violence on a massive scale within Iraq and beyond its borders.

Diplomatic fails could follow Abbott home

Tony Abbott may have made some new friends on his world tour, but back home many voters aren't impressed with how he represents the country.

This might not be anything new for an Australian prime minister, but Abbott's diplomacy shortcomings could cause real headaches on home soil if climate change is left off the G20 agenda in Brisbane this year.

Abbott may have found a sympathetic ear in the Canadian prime minister when he said there were more pressing economic issues than climate change, but he hasn't won the argument at home.

Holden closure jobs plan falls short of SA pre-poll promises

A jobs plan to deal with the car industry's local manufacturing closure is still being promised by the South Australian Government despite a massive shortfall in proposed funding.

Thursday's SA budget will include $60 million to deal with Holden's departure, but the plan is now well short of the one put forward before the state election in March.

The Premier's pre-election jobs plan was drawn up with the hope of a $333 million handout from Canberra, but in the end the Coalition has committed less than half that sum for its own plan - money which will be shared between the manufacturing states.

Shell offloading $5.32 billion in Woodside shares

Global oil giant Royal Dutch Shell is selling almost all of its stake in Australia's biggest oil and gas producer, Woodside.

Shell announced the sale of about 157 million shares in Woodside, netting Shell about $5.32 billion after tax.

Shell is Woodside's biggest shareholder, currently holding 23 per cent or 190 million shares in the company. The sale will reduce it to a shareholding of 4.5 per cent.

Chief executive Ben van Beurden says the decision does not reflect the confidence the company has in Australia as a key energy producer.
