Australian troops to guard embassy in Iraq

A small detachment of Australian soldiers is being sent to Iraq to help bolster security at the Australian embassy in Baghdad.

The Defence Minister's office will not confirm how many personnel have been sent, for security reasons.

The US today deployed 300 military advisers to Iraq, on top of 275 personnel sent to protect its embassy, and warned it is ready to take "targeted" military action against radical fighters if necessary.

Iraqi forces are battling militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), who have seized large swathes of the country's north in the past two weeks.

The law of war: how are our troops deployed?

Australia has sent soldiers to protect its Baghdad embassy, while questions remain about whether it would offer military support to any United States action in Iraq.

While the the Governor General traditionally authorises engagement in foreign conflicts, this process was not followed in 1991 and 2003. Instead, it appears that Australia's previous involvement in Iraq was legally authorised by the defence minister.

The big question, then, is whether this legal and political process should be changed for future deployments.

Cancer Council Victoria finds CFA facility not a cancer risk

Firefighters who worked at the Fiskville training facility are not at a higher risk of cancer than the rest of the population, a Cancer Council Victoria report has found.

The Cancer Council examined reports of cancer cases linked to the chemicals used for live firefighting training at the Fiskville Country Fire Authority (CFA) facility in Ballan between 1971 and 1999.

Dozens of cancer cases were linked to the use of chemicals at Fiskville in the 1970s and '80s.
