Palmer's carbon tax offer tops menu for breakfast meeting with Abbott

Plans to scrap the carbon tax will be discussed over breakfast this morning when Clive Palmer meets with Prime Minister Tony Abbott for the first time in two years.

Mr Palmer has revealed his party will back the repeal of the carbon tax only if lower power prices for consumers are guaranteed, but will vote to stop the Government axing key climate change bodies.

Flanked by climate change campaigner Al Gore, the Palmer United Party leader yesterday said his senators would vote against the Coalition's bid to abolish the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, the Renewable Energy Target and the Climate Change Authority.

Gore blimey! How's that for climate policy?

Clive Palmer's big climate policy reveal certainly didn't lack flourish and even included the surprise appearance of former American vice-president Al Gore.

The significant undertakings are that the Palmer United Party will not support the abolition of the Renewable Energy Target, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, or the Climate Change Authority.

But behind all the big names and rhetoric, the rest of the PUP policies are rather weak and it's in the lower house particularly where his power to push an ETS putters out.

AGL gets green light to purchase MacGen power assets

The Australian Competition Tribunal has overturned a decision by the competition watchdog to block AGL Energy from buying the New South Wales power assets of Macquarie Generation.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) blocked AGL's takeover bid in March, saying it was likely to substantially reduce competition in the NSW retail electricity market.

AGL appealed against the decision, saying it had significant implications for the industry's future.

The Tribunal said today it will allow the $1.5 billion deal with some conditions.
