US ready for 'targeted' military action in Iraq

US president Barack Obama says he is ready to take "targeted" and "precise" military action in Iraq if necessary following the swift advance of radical Sunni fighters.

Speaking at the White House overnight, Mr Obama said the US was ready to send in up to 300 military advisers and make targeted strikes "if and when" the situation on the ground requires it.

It comes as Iraqi government forces battle militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) for control of the country's biggest oil refinery.

Shares surge most this year on Fed's Yellen, China growth pledge

Australian shares have surged on comments from the US Federal Reserve chair and Chinese premier.

The combination of promised low-rate stability in the US and growth promoting measures from Chinese authorities has seen Australia's share market jump, led by the mining sector.

The benchmark ASX 200 is on track for its biggest one-day gain in six months, with its 1.5 per cent rise to 5,461 by 2:29pm (AEST) on track to be the best performance since a 2.1 per cent rise on December 19 last year.

The Australian dollar also jumped on the Fed's renewed commitment to low interest rates for longer.
