Luis Suarez banned for four months over World Cup biting incident

Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has been banned for four months from any football-related activity for biting an Italian player at the World Cup in Brazil.

Suarez has also been suspended for nine matches, FIFA said on Friday, after being found guilty of biting Italian player Giorgio Chiellini during a group stage clash.

"Such behaviour cannot be tolerated on any football pitch, and in particular not at a FIFA World Cup, when the eyes of millions of people are on the stars on the field," a FIFA official said in a statement.

Aboriginal people like Rosie Fulton deserve better

Earlier this year, national media attention was drawn to the plight of Rosie Anne Fulton, in prison in Western Australia even though she has not been convicted of any crime.

Rosie was charged with criminal offences but a court found that because of her foetal alcohol syndrome disorder she would not understand the criminal proceedings.

While it was revealed this week that her release is imminent, imprisonment for Aboriginal people with cognitive impairments is not unique to Rosie, and the Federal Government needs to do something about it.

Garnaut praises Palmer's defence of climate bodies

The man who helped design Australia's current carbon pricing scheme has praised Clive Palmer over his decision to block the abolition of the Renewable Energy Target.

Mr Palmer yesterday revealed his party would vote with the Coalition in the Senate to repeal the carbon tax if lower power prices were locked in, but would fight to retain the RET and other key climate bodies.

Professor Garnaut says Mr Palmer's support for the RET will have "important" effects and help Australia significantly reduce its emissions.

Legislation to repeal the carbon tax passed the Lower House this afternoon and will now be ready to be put before the new Senate as a likely first order of business.
