ABC NewsMail - Afternoon Edition

Good afternoon. Here's what's happening now:

  • Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says he will introduce a bill in parliament this week to enable a same-sex marriage plebiscite

  • Meanwhile, Labor has put forward a compromise to pass $6 billion in savings that includes scrapping the one-off baby bonus for new parents

  • Triple j is understood to be considering changing the date of its annual Australia Day Hottest 100 countdown out of respect for Indigenous people, who view January 26 as the day their land was invaded

Imagine being able to charge your phone with your T-shirt. That could soon become a reality. Scientists say they have invented a super thin fabric that generates electricity from sunlight and movement.

Here's what's coming up:

  • 6:00pm AEST: Minister for Education and Training Simon Birmingham and Labor MP Anthony Albanese will be on RN Drive

  • 7:00pm AEST: The shortlist for the Man Booker Prize will be announced in London

  • 9:30pm AEST: On ABC1, Bob Connolly returns to PNG's Highlands for Foreign Correspondent, 25 years after he filmed the Highlands Trilogy

  • 12:25am AEST: Madeleine Hogan will compete in the women's F46 javelin throw final at the Rio Paralympics
